Simile:
The Comparison between two different things by using “As” or “Like”.
- He is like a lion.
- My teacher is like an angel.
- The child is as cute as kitten.
- The glow of his face was as bright as sunshine.
Metaphor:
The direct comparison between two different things without using “As” or “Like”.
- He is a lion.
- My teacher is an angel.
- The camel is the ship of the desert.
- This class is a zoo.
Simile can be compressed into Metaphor and Metaphor can be compressed into Simile.
- For Example:
- Life is like a dream. (Simile)
- Life is a dream. (Metaphor)
- My daughter is like a flower.(Simile)
- My daughter is a flower. (Metaphor)
Personification:
In personification, any object or idea is given human characteristics or qualities.
When we give the qualities of living thing to non-living thing, it is called personification.
- For Example:
- i.The flame of the candle danced in the dark.
- ii.The moon smiled upon the river.
- iii.The upper leaves are drinking raindrops.
- iv.English comes to me.
Alliteration
It is repetition of the same consonant sound or syllable at the beginning of two or more words.
- For Example:
- i. My dear deer is very dear.
- ii. I saw a saw which could not saw.
- iii. A good cook who cooked cookies as much as a good cook could cook cookies.
Assonance:
Assonance is the repetition of the same vowel sound in nearby words.
- For Example:
- 1.The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain. (Repeated ai sound)
- 2.Men sell the wedding bells. (Repeated e sound)
- 3.The crow slowly flows over the road. (Repeated o sound)
- 4.Sunny bunny runs funny. (Repeated u sound)
- 👉 Note: Only the vowel sound repeats, not the consonants.
Imagery:
• It is language that produces pictures in the minds of people by means of words.
• Imagery is the use of words that help us see, hear, smell, taste, or feel something in our mind.
- For Example:
- The red rose is beautiful. 👀 (seeing)
- The bell rang loudly. 👂 (hearing)
- The soup smells good. 👃 (smell)
- The ice is cold. ✋ (touch)
- The apple tastes sweet. 👅 (taste)
